3D model of Mount St. Helens after the 1980 eruption

Mount St. Helens, in Washington State (Northwest U.S.), erupted on May 18, 1980. It was extremely intense, spewing out around 2.9 cubic kilometres of material.

The eruption itself was preceded by two months of earthquakes and steam jets caused by the infiltration of magma at shallow depth below the mountain.

This magma provoked a network of fractures and deformations in the north side of the volcano; on May 18, 1980 at 8:32 am, an earthquake triggered a massive landslide on the north face. In less than twenty seconds, the magma erupted in the form of a pyroclastic flow.

The Smart Baby Monitor is a next-generation baby monitor. You can keep an eye on your kid wherever you are through your smartphone (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android).

This smart baby monitor is fitted with a 3 megapixel wide angle webcam, infrared LED to see in the dark, microphone and motion sensor.

You can also set custom alarms based on several parameters such as motion, temperature, humidity or noise. You can also play music.

The Smart Baby Phone will be commercially available in March 2011.

AR-Media Plugin: view your 3D models in augmented reality

AR-media is an extension for Google SketchUp (Windows and Mac) and Autodesk 3ds Max (Windows) created by Inglobe Technologies.

Version 2.0 of the extension, which has just been released, allows you to view your work in augmented reality.

Augmented reality has received a lot of attention  lately, but here’s a quick explanation if you’ve missed out:

Augmented reality is a system that superimposes data or other elements such as 3D models onto your webcam image. The system locates markers (symbols) that you have placed in your environment and displays the corresponding 3D model on the screen of your computer (or smartphone). Video broadcast by your webcam (reality) is “augmented” with an additional layer, added on by software. If you move a marker, this moves the 3D object associated with this marker.

Patateman: the li’l potato out to conquer the world

Patateman (“spudman”) is a character born in 2004 as a 3D illustration designed with the Lightwave application.

This is how its creator, Roland Fuentealba, describes it:

“Patateman is a friendly, facetious potato-shaped creature who’s out to conquer the world and spread his high spirits! This is why he’s taking his friends – and girlfriend, Patategirl – along with him on his zany-heroic adventures, as told in his online comic. So come and join the masses of people who’ve discovered his crazy world and friends on his very own website.”
